WAIPA CHAMPIONSHIPS. WEDNESDAY’S GAMES. The Waipa Hockey Association’s championship competitions were begun yesterday afternoon, but there was not a large attendance at the headquarters ground, Albert Park. The Empson Cup competit.on game was between Ramblers and the newlyformed Te Rahu Club, while the Finch Rose Bowl competition (ladies’ championship) was between Hairini and Paterangi. Ramblers and Te Rahu had Messrs T. Finch and R. Hinton as referees. Play commenced with a brisk attack by Te ißahu, but they were soon beaten off, and a sustained attack by Ramblers on Te Rahu’s citadel saw some fine work done by the defending goalie, J. Foster. Time after time he saved neatly, and at length the attack was beaten off. Play was up and down the field, with little advantage to either side, until after twenty minutes’ play, when Ramblers swept right to the circle, and W. Daniell, B. Gibson, and T. Dalziel attacked solidly, a. goal being registered by the first-named. In the second half Te Rahu did better, and for a time they .had Ramblers fully extended, but lack ol experience was noticeable in their attacks on the goal. A. O. F'inch and Melville were very sound on defence, and frequently Finch cleared with, a long, clean shot that sent Te Rahu back on the defensive. After one brisk exchange, Gibson rushed the play right into Te Rahu’s circle, and beat the goalie to score a well-earned goal. Te Rahu rushed back to the attack, but the defence held, and play was even for the final few minutes of play. Ramblers thus won by two goals to nil. THE LADIES’ MATCH. Paterangi Club, who has reistered scores of victories in recent years, fielded several new players (most of them comparative novdees) in the match with Hairini; but they still had three or four stalwarts to leaven the ioaf. Hairini also had several experienced players, but when it came to scoring ability Paterangi was clearly superior. Hairini attacked solidly right from the bullyoff, and were doing well until overeagerness let the opposition break away, and soon E. Spiers registered the initial goal. Three minutes later the same player put on the second goal, and K. Macky added the third. Before the spell ended E. Spiers made the total four, but V. Collison, who had been playing solidly on the right wing, registered a goal for Hairini. After the interval V. Collison addged another for Hairini, but before play had been long in progress two more goals were shot for Paterangi by E. Spiers, her skill and knowledge of the game making her quite too clever for the opposition. The game ended: Patei'angi, 6; Hairini, 2. Mr C. S. Davis refereed.
