LAND FOR SMALL FARMS
CRITICISM! OF PURCHASES. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A reply has been made by the Prime Minister, Mr Forbes, to a complaint by the New Zealand Small Farms League that unsuitable land at excessive prices was being acquired for applicants for small farms. “Regarding the suggestion that an impartial inquiry be made into the recent acquisition of land under the Small Farms Act,” wrote Mr Forbes, “I have to say that it is not proposed to set up a special committee to inquire 'into the matter, as such a course is not deemed necessary. I would point out, however, that land for such purposes is acquired by the Government on the recommendation of the Small Farms Board and the sub-committees set up under the Act to advise • the board in such matters.
“After conferring with the Minister of Lands, who is administering the Act, I can see no grounds for the fears which you have expressed.”
