THE EVIDENCE OF HITLER'S BOOK.

Against decent Jews I have no complaint to make, but whenever the Jews ally themselves with Bolshevism, then we regard them as enemies—thus Herr Hitler to an English correspondent in the autumn of 1930, ;when he attached some importance to having a good press in England. Copied dutifully into the German papers, which, being "Jewish," were unworthy of a Hitler interview, it still stands to thousands of Germans as their Chancellor's considered view on the Jewish question. They do not read their Chancellor's own book. "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle")—a struggle of nearly 800 pages—is the real Hitler, or, rather, the Hitler that the Chancellor hopes will be taken as the real Hitler, and the real Hitler runs a risk of becoming one of the classics of anti-Semitism. j Hitler was an anti-Semite long before he ever thought either of a Nazi party or even a world war. He was brought up in the ultra-German lower-middle class of pre-war Austria, which was anti-Semitic by a two-fold tradition >f intellectual inferiority and economic subjection. In the local school the small boy Hitler failed to understand, a'nd therefore distrusted a Jewish classmate. By the time he was fifteen he A was hearing more often the word "Jew" and "felt a slight repulsion." In the home town of Linz the few odd Jews were "Europeanised"; the would-be architect still regarded them as different only in religion, until one day "I suddenly encountered.an apparition in a long caftan with black curls. 'ls he, too, a German?' was my first thought." He sought the answer in books—"I bought for a few coppers my first anti-Semitic books"—in the antiSemitic press, from Luegar and the Christian Socialists, and found a negative one. The apparition in the caftain was realised to emit an evil smell—a symbol, for suddenly he "discovered behind the physical uncleanness the moral filthiness of the chosen people," and he asked: "Is there any dirty, any shameless business anywhere of any kind in which ther eisn't at laest one Jew mixed up?" The manifold activity of the Jew sent shudders through his adolescent brain full of propaganda pamphlets, and at last he recognised in Jewry "this pestilence, this spiritual pestilence, worse than the Black Death of old, with which the nation is being infected; there was no denying the fact that nine-tenths of the literary filth, the artistic prurience, and the imbecility of the stage y could be laid at the door of a race that was less than 1 per cent, of the population of Austria." Some more pamphlets, and then he realised that Jews were the leaders of Social Democracy. "The scales fell from my eyes; a long spiritual conflict had ended." This section of "Mein Kampf" is headed "Conversion to Anti-Semitism," and it concludes: If the Jew wins . . .his crown of victory is the death-wreath of humanity, and this planet will once again, as it did ages ago, float through the ether bereft of men. Eternal Nature inexorably avenges the breaking of her law. And today I believe I strive in the way of the Almighty Creator. When I defend myself against the Jews I fight for the work of the Lord. The Jew is the enemy. That explains everything to which Hitler personally objects—the Parliamentary system, Manchester Liberalism, prostitution, the emancipation of women, the Versailles Treaty, racial degeneration, and particularly the latter, for race mixture is not, as hitherto believed, a normal evolutionary process, but a diabolical plot on the part of the Jew: "The black-haired Jewish youth lies for hours in ambush, a Satanic joy in his face, for the unsuspecting girl whom he pollutes with his blood and steals from her own race. By every means he seeks to wreck the racial bases of the nation he intends to subdue. Just as individually he deliberately befouls women and girls so he never shrinks from wrecking the barriers race has erected against foreign elements. It was and is the Jew who brought negroes to the Rhine, brought them with the same aim and deliberate intent to destroy the white race he hates by persistent bastardisation, to hurl it from the gajfairal and political heights it has ItPlihed, and to ascend them as its matters. ... He deliberately seeks to lower the race-level by steady corruption of the individual.

"The JeW is the worm of destruction gnawing at the tree of civilisation. For his own purposes the Jew has based his activity on the supreme lie that Jewry'is a religious society, whereas it is a race which has merited the description of 'the great master of the lie.' Jewry is a plague which has to be fought as tuberculosis or syphilis is fought." The Jew represents racially the reaction of the lower race against the higher—Hitler's "racialism' 'is, on the whole, only the unintelligent political application of the theorising of Houston Chamberain and his inspirers. The Jew is incapable of true culture. What he possesses is "sham cutlure . . . stolen from

cultured races and corrupted in the process." The Jew is a parasite

seeking everywhere new pastures for his blood-sucking propensities, and the scale on which he carries on his parasitism is revealed in the "Protocols of the Wise Men of Zion," a book so terrible that if it became the common property of a nation the Jewish peril would ipso facto disappear. Jewish policy is summed up thus: Economically the Jew undermines the State until he succeeds in getting all the economic activity under his financial control. "Politically he deprives the State of the means of subsistence, destroys the bases of every possibility of independence and self-defence, destroys faith in the national leaders, ridicules and maligns its past history, and drags all that has the characteristics of greatness in the gutter. "Culturally he corrupts art, literature, and the drama, mocks at natural feeling, destroys all conceptions of beauty, nobility, and goodness and so drags humanity in the train of his own base way of life. Religion he makes ridiculous; morals and decency he declares superfluous, until the last resource is taken from the nation fighting for its existence." Basis of Hitlerism. The hated Marxism is truly hated when it is hated as Jewish. The Marxist in Russia is "the international Jew" who "belongs to a race that in a unique fashion combines bestial cruelty with a skill in mendacity that is inconceivable and feels itself more than ever called to perform its mission of submitting the whole world to its bloody tyranny." "Anti-Semitism is . . . the basis of our movement. . \ . Every National Socialist (Nazi) is an anti-Semite," and Hitler in a lyric passage redolent of certain passages of the Old Testament says:

"He who is not assailed, insulted, and bespotted by the Jewish press is no honest German and no true National Socialist. . . . Every Jewish calumny and every Jewish lie is an honorable decoration on the breasts of our warriors. ... He who is most reviled is dearest to us; he who is most deadly hated is our best friend. He who seizes the Jewish paper in the morning and finds he is not insulted has not usefully employed the hours of yesterday; if he had, he would have been pursued, assailed, reviled, insulted, and calumnated by Jews; he deserves well of his race, for he is hated by the Jew who, the personification of the Devil himself, rejects personality, and so destroys the primary basis of the whole culture 'of humanity. . . . With the detraction of personality and race falls the only real barrier to the supremacy of the inferior man —and that is the Jew.

"Between the German a'nd the Jew there can be no truce, and a truceless war is a brutal war, in which any means is justified. Once the enemy is overcome he must be extirpated."

No Jew a German.

In the programme issued under Hitler's signature which outlines the Constitution of the future "racial" German State, point 4 says: "Only a member of the German nation can be a full citizen. A member of the German nation is one who is of German blood. ... No Jew, therefore, is a member of the German nation." Point 5 runs: "Anyone who is not a full citizen can only live as a guest in Germany, and must be under the aliens' law." Point 6 says: "Only full citizens can hold any public office of any kind whatever anywhere." Point 23 runs: "All workers on editorial staffs of papers written in German must be full citizens. . . . Financial participation in such German papers is to be legally prohibited to nonGermans," and by point 24, demanding complete religious freedom, an exception is made in the case of a religion which is dangerous to the welfare of the State or is repugnant to the moral sentiment of the Germanic race.

These points are only the logical expression of the anti-Semitism that is the leitmotiv of "Mein Kampf." Take away' that anti-Semitism and one takes away the one fundamental basis of Hitler's conception of the universe; all the rest is a farrago of undigested and uncorrelated opinion. His anti-Semitism is the only thing in Hitler's intellectual content that is 'not derivative, in the literary sense of that word.
