NOSES

The supervisor of the London Light and Electrical Clinic, in the course of a recent address, referred to experiments he has made, in counteracting the effect ol' infra-red rays on the skin. There are, he said, two sorts of people in the world people with stuffy noses and people with wide nos-

es. The wide-nosed people can apparently breathe anywhere, but those with catarrhal and stuffy noses love the open air, open windows and open fires. This division of the human race into two classes—stuffy nose. 3 and wide noses—is the real reason of the great ventilation controversy. He said there had been a battle between the two clans in the House of Commons. There were members who declared that the ventilation, or lack of it, was hateful; others found no better air in the shires. Incidentally he described the system of ventilation in the House of Commons as one which had a tendency to give members cold feet and hot heads. Stuffiness in a room where dull red or dark heat is given out is caused by the infra-red rays acting on the skin and reflexly through the nerves, provoking congestion of the membrane of the nose. This is claimed to be a revolutionary discovery as regards the theory and practice of heating and ventilating rooms. Modern incandescent gas fires were nose-openers, but the ordinary electric fire was a nose-shutter.
