PRICES FOR PRODUCE
STATEMENT BY MR COATES.
(By Telegraph. Press Association.) STRATFORD, Monday.
The importance to the Dominion of a rise in the level of prices of primary products was emphasised by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, speaking at Tangarakau to-day at the luncheon held in celebration of the opening of the Stratford railway. "It has not been stated publicly, but before the Ottawa Conference the one thing that worried the Government was the question whether we could possibly find a sale for our products this year," he said. "It was a question whether we could get a sale at all, at any price, or have our produce left on our hands. This was one of tb© driving forces that moved the Empire to common purpose at Ottawa." ; The Empire's statesmen were now t sworn to a policy of raising th© wholesale price level,' and for that reason the Government asked the farmers t<j carry on with their production.
Everyone would have to subject himself to certain sacrifices before prosperity returned, and the Government looked to the community generally to help it out. It could only do so by concerted action,^and if factions pulled one against the other no satisfactory way out could be found, without more hardship being incurred.
