BOWLING

; SOUTH AUCKLAND CENTRE. I MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. At a meeting of the South Auck- . land Bowling Centre's executive last Wednesday evening Mr J. T. North (Te Awamutu) presided. A letter was received from the ' Taranaki Bowling Centre accepting ' the South Auckland Centre's invitation for a party of Taranaki bowlers to visit Hamilton. Taranaki suggested that the dates be early It was decided to inform Taranaki that the dates would be acceptable. Cambridge Club was given permission to hold its annual tournament at Easter. The Leamington Club was given permission to hold a one-day tournament on 19th November, and Putaruru Club was granted 30th November for its tournament. Whitiora Club will hold a one-day tournament on 23rd November. An application from the Matamata Club for a one-day tournament on Boxing Day was refused. A challenge was received from the Auckland Centre for the Hardley Shield. The challenge was accepted, and Auckland was invited to play in S Hamilton in December, on or before the 15th. It was proposed to entertain the ' 'veterans " on the afternoon of 18th January, the minimum age being 60 years. The secretary was instructed to circularise the clubs in the matter, the Centre secretary to be notified before 11th January of the_ number of players who would be available. There was a long discussion on the question of three-day tournaments in the New Year holidays, it being pointed out that such tournaments would be detrimental to the Centre's tournament at Christmas. Claudelands and Hamilton Clubs applied for threeday tournaments at New Year, and the applications were declined. After another lengthy discussion it was suggested that these two clubs, Hamilton and Claudelands, be notified that tournaments on the New Year dates, on separate days, would be favourably considered. It was decided to hold the South Auckland tournament on the Hamilton 1 Club's green subject to the approval of the Hamilton Club. TE AWAMUTU CLUB. HANDICAPS FOR COMPETITIONS. " No bowl bearing the stamp of the council's official tester shall be stamped or altered until a new dated stamp has been supplied by the council." This is one of the new rules which have just been issued on the subject of testing, and settles a point which has been raised more than once in the past. It means that a bowler whose bowls have been tested and stamped cannot get them made narrower or otherwise altered by sending them to the tester in another centre. Such a thing has been done, for I know that bowls bearing an official stamp have been sent from Taranaki to Wellington to be made narrower. The tester would not have altered them, but for his own satisfaction he put them over the machine, and they were found to be in orderHe returned them with a note to that effect. It is obvious that there are excellent reasons why the position should be clarified, and that one tester should not be called upon to passjudgment upon a brother tester. If a bowler is dissatisfied with the work of the centre tester his course is to apply to the Dominion official tester,, in which case the matter would probably have to come before the executive. I understand that the New Zealand Bowling Association contemplates acquiring a new setf of standard bowls, and this shoule&t.remove..*' any apprehension that the bowls at present in use are not exactly alike.—Contributed.
