JERSEY JOTTINGS
NOTES FROM FAR AND NEAR
The highest cow in the Bay of Plenty Herd Testing Association for last season is a Jersey grade that produced 814 lb of fat' in 305 days. The remarkable return for the ninth month of her lactation of 110.35 lb fat for May brought Woodlands Felicie's total up to 962.26 lb fat in 287 days. With an ounce of luck Woodlands Felice who is the property of the Taranaki breeder, Mr P. J. Peterson, has excellent prospects of breaking the world's record of 1197.51 lb fat held by the American cow, Abigail of Hillside. At the request of the Victoria Jersey Society, the New Zealand Council has recommended Mr Harold Moreland, Newstead, Waikato, as judge of the pedigree Jersey section at the Melbourne Royal Show next September.
Amongst the exports of New Zealand Jerseys this season are two rising two year old heifers sold to Mr N. R. Barnett, Huon, Tasmania, by Mr C. G. C. Dermer, "Waipiko," Cheltenham. Both are particularly good types by Vivandiere's Prince C. 8.8., from daughters of V.C (imp.), C. 8.8., and the two are in calf to Waipiko Acme, son of Hollv Oak Annie, C.0.R., 1056 lb fat. As judge of the pedigree Jersey section at the N.Z. Royal Show this year the Council of the Jersey Association has recommended the following names in order of preference:— Messrs W. H. Miers (Rototuna, Hamilton), B. H. Moreland (Te Rapa, Hamilton), and W. H. Booth (Carterton) . Twenty-four new members were elected at the last Council meeting of the New Zealand Jersey Association.
In an Oklahoma A. and M. College station experiment Professors P. C. McGilliard and Earl Weaver reported cost of production of butter fat per pound was: Friesians 44 cents, Ayrshires 36 cents, Guernseys 34 cents, Jerseys 32 cents.
