WRESTLING

BAYNE'S SUCCESS IN BRISBANE.

We take the following from the latest issue of the Brisbane Courier to hand (July 23rd : The New Zealand wrestler, Billy Bayne (13.3), made a successful debut at the Bohemia Stadium last night, being declared the winner over Tommy Nilan (13.2) in the seventh round. Nilan was cautioned on several occasions for illegal work in the earlier sessions, and when he again flouted the rules in the seventh term w&s promptly disqualified by the referee (Mr W.'Munden). The muscular New Zealander created a good impression with his clean and clever work, and was accorded a splendid ovation when declared the winner. The men wrestled vigorously and cleverly in the first two rounds, and in the third Bayne scored 1 he first fall with a flying head scissors and body press. Spectacular grappling was featured in the fourth and fifth sessions, but a good bout was marred by outbursts of simulated fury in the sixth round, the referee exchanging blows with the wrestlers, and having (his shirt torn to ribbons. Bayne walked out of the ring in disgust, but was prevailed upon to return. A little later Nilan dumped the New Zealander for the equalising fall. After Nilan had been disqualified in the seventh he engaged in a rough-and-tumble with Bayne and the referee, but order was soon restored. A LETTER FROM BAYNE. The many friends of Mr " Bill" Bayne, the Te Awamutu wrestler, who is at present in Brisbane, will be pleased to learn that he is so far having a successful trip and his style of wrestling has appealed to the Brisbane public. In a lengthy letter to a Te Awamutu friend Bill writes of this first match:— "Well, I have landed the first scalp, and everyone reckons it was the most exciting and scientific bout they have seen in Brisbane. I did what you told me—to play the game and wrestle clean—and I can tell you I am proud of the way I behaved under the circumstances., This guy (Nilan) made a punching ball of my face and head. Both my eyes are blackened and my mouth and teeth are in a terrible state, and I am ashamed to appear in the street to-day. lam not being vain in saying I was the favourite with the public. Talk about the crowd being furious! One old chap of 70 climbed into the ring with his walking stick to knopk Nilan for his rough tactics. Everything is allowed here, even to throwing your man out of the ring if you wish, and Nilan threw me out twice. I am wrestling John Swalof, Russian of my own weight next, and think I can beat him also. (This match was a draw.—Ed). We wrestle every Friday night. I stayed with the All Blacks for two days and now we have the All Black hockey players here, so New Zealand is well represented lately.". ■ I
