RUGBY FOOTBALL

GAMES ON WEDNESDAY. WAIPA'S TWO REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS WIN. The Waipa Rugby Union staged two representative games at Albert Park ' on Wednesday afternoon, before a good attendance of the public, and in bright weather. Both games resulted in rather decisive wins for the Waipa p. avers. It will be remembered that at their earlier meetings Cambridge senior : representatives defeated Waipa by 8 points to 3, and a few weeks later they drew, 8 points each. This latter game was an elimination one for the Peace Cup challenge, and, ow.ng to the draw, had to be re-played. Waipa's win yesterday entitled that body to challenge Matamata for the• Cup, and the date set down for this match is Saturday of next week, 13th August (at Matamata), which date is the same as that arranged for the Hamilton B versus Waipa representative game (at Te Awamutu) in the Finlay Cup contest. THE JUNIOR GAME. WAIPA V. WAIKERIA. Waikeria kicked off, and the ball went out. From the throw-in Waipa forwards rushed the ball right to the goal-posts, and after a couple of scrums a penalty gave Waikeria relief, and they gradually worked down field. Another penalty gained further ground. A good rush by the Waipas relieved the pressure. P. Bell had a shot at goal that fell short. The Waipa backs passed brightly to gain ground until Adams passed forward. A Waikeria forward offside gave Bell another opportun.ty, and he kicked a nice goal. Waipa 3, Waikeria 0. Line play fo.lowed, until Adams worked the blind side of the scrum, and soon the forwards rushed over the line. A scrum resulted, and in a flash Adams cut round and dived over. Bell converted. Waipa 8, Wa-i keria 0. A minute later Adams set his backs in motion again, and K. Wilson centred, the forwards securing and T. Macky went over. P. Bell converted. Waipa 13, Waikeria 0. Adams repeated the tactics, working the other wing, and Brennan scored at the corner. The kick failed. Waipa 16, Waikeria 0., Even play followed, with Waipa most effective. Brennan took a pass on the side line and crossed over for another try. Bell failed. Waipa 19, Waikeria 0. The visitors got two penalties that took them upfield, but the Waipa backs were playing confidently. The Waikerias were in a scoring position, but Bell intercepted a pass and the forwards swept down-field, but Waikeria returned the play, and were doing well when half time came. On resuming, Waipa again attacked, but the Waikeria full-back was safe. The Waipa backs, passing neatly, went up-field, and Brennan scored wide out. Bell failed. Waipa 22, Waikeria 0. The Waikeria forwards raced to the attack and gained valuable ground, but were not supported, and the fullback forced. Again the Waipa backs passed right across field, K. Wilson being held up on the line. Ragged play followed, until Adams dribbled through, picked up, and sent to Bell to K. Wilson, who raced over. Bell converted. Waipa 27*Waikeria 0. For an infringement Watson had a shot at goal but it fell short and Waikeria forced. Keeping up the pressure Waipa were nearly over, but mishandling let Waikeria work out of danger, but Clarke punted high, and Dalton secured, to be obstructed on the line. Bell had an unsuccessful shot at goal, and Waikeria forced. From the kick out Waikeria forwards raced up-field, and from a line-out the backs handled snappily for one of the five-eighths to dodge over for a welldeserved try. The kick was successful. Waipa 27, Waikeria 5. With this success the Waikerias played better, and sent Waipa to the defensive, until Horsman and K. Wilson carried on almost to the line. Again the Waikerias attacked, and gamed a penalty 30 yards out. A beautiful goal was registered. Waipa 27, Waikeria 8. Straight away the Waikerias were on the attack, due to a great run by the loose forward. A penalty was not improved upon. Brough and Macky broke through, and then Watson and Brennan carried on A little later a Waikeria forward infringed m front of his own goal, and Bell converted. Waipa 30, Waikeria 8. Even play continued until the final whistle. Mr R. Callis refereed. THE SENIORS. PEACE CUP ELIMINATION. WAIPA V. CAMBRIDGE. Play was kept in the centre of the field unti Kelly secured and found the line well down, where Harbutt and. D. Wilson were doing well, but the Waipa pack was bustling hard. Tight rucks were features of the next few minutes. A penalty for off-side let Cambridge out of an awkward position, but the VVaipas were soon'on the aggressive once more, the backs throwing the ban about nicely. From a scrum Waipa got a penalty kick, and Lash's shot fell just short. From succeeding lineouts Cambridge did best and an infringement saw W. Cooper have a shot. The ball went wide. Even play

A good pass.ng rush by Waipa backs' saw the bail come out to Elliot, but he was crowded on the line. Lash had another unsuccessful penaLy kick. A moment later the Waipas got going, and the ball went ojut to Elacott, who in-passed to Lash to Meredith, who dived over for a really good try. Lash added the minor po.ncs with a beautifiu kick.

After half time Waipa promptly attacked and M. Grace broke for the line, only to be up-ended by Garland. Play was sent back to half-way. Waipa were again penalised for knocking forward in a line-out, and Wilson gained further ground by leading his pack through the Waipa forward line. A pass.ng bouc by Cambridge backs broke down through off-side play, and the Waipas rushed to the line. The ball went right across to Ellicott, who dropped the pass. Quin carried on, but was blocked. Hard play in midfield ended when the Cambridge backs set up a passing rush; but little advantage was gained. A penalty for Cambridge saw Wynyard mark it nicely, bulc mis-handling spoiled the advantage, and Cambridge attacked. Curie was nearly over with the ball at toe, and Quin's kick to clear was charged down. A try seemed likeiy until Belf cleared. Cooper had a penalty kick from 35 yards out, and the ball rebounded from the cross bar. A penalty a little later for Cambridge was spoiled by a man in front, and Bell set his backs going again, but Ellicott was thrown out. Wynyard broke through from a lme-out, and was .neariy over but the defence held. Cambridge forwards were hooking almost every time from the scrums; but from one Jackson secured and reversepassed to Bell to E'diot, who raced along the line and went ovei', but he had stepped on the side-line. In a flash the backs went up again, and the ball crossed to W. Macky, who scored. Lash converted. It was a good try, the ball going from Jackson to Miller to Bell to Lash to Macky. Waipa 10, Cambridge 5. Elliot and Ellicott went up the line, but the advantage was only ""temporary. However, for scrum infringement Lash had another shot at goal, the ball going just outside the pos i t. Bell was playing a wonderful game, and in one movement Jackson shot round the scrum, and drew Byrne, before passing to Bell, who scored an easy try. Lash converted. Waipa 15, Cambridge 5. In a flash the Waipas were going again, Jackson cutting in and passing to Bell, back to Jackson to Elliot, who scored. Lash failed with the kick. Waipa 18, Cambridge 5. The Waipas were playing with dash, and had all the best of the game. Quin took a difficult catch and sent the ball out at half way. A little later Macky ran through but fell in avoiding Byrne. Jackson received from Wynyard in a line-out, and sent to Miller to Lash to Ellicott, who dived over wide out. Lash found the angle too difficult. Waipa 21, Cambridge 5. Waipa again attacked, and had Cambridge on the defence. A penlty gave Lash another kick, and he succeeded. Wa'pa 24, Cambridge 5. Cambrige spoiled Ellicott's return, but Bel got Waipa out of trouble with a good line-kick. Cambridge was soon back, due to straight running by E. Shaw and Holmes, but Quin forced.
