VALUE OF PEDIGREE STOCK.
OPPORTUNITIES OF TIME. « Never was there such a golden opportunity of getting right into the pedigree business. Good pedigree Jerseys will never again be so cheap, and what is more, the discriminating buyer will be able to secure at a reasonable price immature animals carrying some of the best blood in the world. It is an undeniable fact that no country, even the Island of Jersey, contains better blood than that which is available in New Zealand. Many farmers believe the high-pro-ducing grade animal is good enough for them. But what of the potential value of the offspring? In the case of bull calves the pedigree one, if from a great producing cow may be worth big money, whereas the bull calf of the grade, however good that gi’ade may be ; \ will be worth only a few shillings as a “bobby” calf for it will have to be knocked on the head. Then to the lover of an animal—and what man could fail to love, a Jersey —a ’ good pedigree animal, especially when it is as good at the bucket as it is to look at, is an animal one is proud to own. Butter-fat is our main objective -but if we can get it by means of beautiful animals the business is a thousand times more interesting, indeed the work becomes a hobby, and one joi the most delightful hobbies a man can follow. —
