GRAIN FOR PIGS

A MILLER’S EXPERIENCE. A large pig feeder, who began life as a miller and still grinds all his own meal, recently suggested to an English writer that the majority of the meals sold for pig feeding are ground too fine. For himself, he believed in a mixture containing 65 per cent of barley and wheat meal, in about equal parts, for pigs of any age. But he insisted that these should only be coarsely ground, practically only well crushed, and he feeds this to even very young pigs—in fact, from weaning. “ His pigs certainly look well,” says the writer, “ and he assured me that he has never had any trouble from digestive disorders, scours, or similar complaints such as one would anticipate. Next time lam grinding my own meal I think I shall try an experiment to see whether I find my friend’s advice worth following.”
