BUTTER PRICES RISE

AN ADVANCE OF 3s A CWT. CHEESE ALSO IMPROVES. AUCKLAND, This Day. After a steady decline during the past four weeks, prices for New Zea- . land butter and cheese in the London market have moved upward. This week’s price for New Zealand finest butter, which is quoted at 97s to 98s a cwt, shows an advance of 3s a cwt on that ruling at the end of last week. Cheese, at 57s a cwt for white and 58s a cwt for coloured, shows an improvement of Is and 2s a cwt respectively. Reports indicate that the market generally is more active, and more business is being done. A favourable tor is the improvement which is announced in the Continental market, where the tone is reported to besteadier. With the approach of the Ottawa Conference considerable attention is being devoted to arguments supporting the restriction of foreign imports of butter and cheese into the United Kingdom. In answer to the criticism published this week to the effect that Devonshire butter producers have had to hold back their supplies because of heavy imports of New Zealand butter, one firm points out that the one way to avoid United Kingdom butter feeling the effects of competition from ' Empire butter is to make more room for both by partially excluding foreign butters.
