A NEW PROCEDURE

COUNTY CHAIRMANSHIP TO GO ROUND. In its comparison with local body procedirre of the past, a rather novel decision was arrived at at the annual meeting of the Waikato County Council when it was unanimously agreed that for the ensuing three years, at least, the office of chairman should go round among the councillors. The suggestion was offered by councillor C. T.' Henderson that every councillor should occupy the chair for twelve months and that the office should be offered to councillors according to the length of their service on the council. In moving in this direction, councillor Henderson said he felt that such procedure would help preserve harmony, it would enable councillors to obtain a more intimate knowledge of the affairs of the County and especially of a financial nature. He considered the suggestion would be beneficial, not only to individual councillors, but also’ to the Council and the County as a whole. The motion was seconded by Cr J. Sampson who was in full sympathy with the proposal. The newly-electeil chairman, Cr W. Newell, strongly supported the motion and said he had suggested the same procedure to the Waikato Agricultural Association 20 years ago. He thought it was a very good thing to encourage. It was not right that persons should hold local body and public offices for a life-time. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried.
