RUBBER FIREWOOD

BEING USED IN LONDON. The use of raw rubber as a substitute for firewood is the latest project of interested parties here (writes a London correspondent). The scheme at first glance seems fantastic, but so certain are the research workers ofl success that steps are being taken to distribute the commodity in a form convenient to the thrifty housewife. They can certainly adduce many arguments in favour of their venture. Rubber is now procurable at 2d per lb. In the form of strips it can be easily stored and handled; it is perfectly clean; it burns steadily, and with only a faint and quite pleasant aroma; and the cost of lighting a fire through its medium works out at a farthing. On these grounds the assertion is made that for the hiker and camper a packet of raw rubber in the knapsack is a boon, while, by way of appealing to the speculative instincts of the housewife, it is further observed that in the event of a sharp rise in the price of rubber a store of the commodity placed in the domestic cellar at 2d a lb would prove a capital investment.
