BLAMED THE APPLE
ENGINEER LOSES THREE FINGERS. (By Telegraph. Press Association). AUCKLAND, this day. As he was reaching for an apple resting on the wing of a Gipsy Moth aeroplane at the Mangere aerodrome early yesterday morning, Mr R. J. Copley, ground engineer to the Auckland Aero Club, met with a serious accident to his left hand, which was stuck by the whirling propeller. Three fingers were severe'y injured and were later amputated. Mr Copley had just wheeled out a machine from the hangar and had swung the propeller. The engine started, and as Mr Copley stretched out his hand to get the apple he had placed on the wing he misjudged the distance and was struck. He was admitted to hospital, where the operation was performed.
