HAMILTON BRIDGE

APPROVAL OF DESIGN. COST ESTIMIATED AT £24,300. Approval of a design for a proposed bridge across the Waikato River at Hamilton at a site known as No. 1 bridge, at the northern end of the

town, was given by a conference of

representatives of the Hamilton Bor- , ough Council, Waikato Hamilton Borcil, and Wiaipa County Council at Hamilton last Friday. The Mayor ei Hamilton, Dr F. D. Pinfold, presided.

. A committee/appointed at the last meeting of the delegates • reported that the Government would'contribute

£BOOO toward the cost of a bridge costing £24,300, and recommended that the balance be found by the local bodies concerned in the following

proportions: Hamilton Borough, four-ninths, £7300; Waikato County, four-ninths, £7300; Waiipa Ctfunty, one-ninth, £I7OO. At the committee's request three designs were submitted by Mr S. W. Jones, of Messrs Adams and Jones, bridge engineers, Wellington. The engineers of the local bodies

represented were urianimous in their . preference for the first design, which provided for a reinforced concrete bridge comprising three spans of about 130 ft., and two land spans of 25ft. each. The foundations were

-mass concrete piers under the river spans, reinforced concrete abutments, «nd a small reinforced concrete pier carrying the land spans. A clear roadway o 20ft. was provided, and •two footpaths of 25ft. clear. The bridge was estimated to cost £21,500, plus cost of approaches, engineering charges, and extras, which were estimated to bring the total up to about £24,300. On the motion of the Mayor the desiggn was approved, and it was decided to_ submit the data secured by the committee to the local bodies conr cerned for further action.
