ADULT EDUCATION

URGENT NEED OF FUNDS. The urgent necessity for funds if the activities of the Workers' Educational Association are to be carried on in the Waikato was emphasised by Dr J. C. Beaglehole in a letter to the Te Awamutu branch of the Farmers' Union last Saturday. Mr Beaglehole pointed out that the association was about to begin its annual canvass for funds. The association was financed partly by the Government grants through the University, and partly from the subscriptions and donations from its students and sympathisers. In common with all other institutions, it was this year passing through a very anxious period; it had suffered a 10 per cent, cut in its Government grant and was faced with the probable loss of Government subsidy on voluntary contributions. Tutors' salaries had been reduced and other economies made in every possible way with the object of maintaining without contraction the system of adult education the association had built up. He added that he know the branch was iin full and heaiity agreement with the work and ideal of the Workers' Educational Association—the ideal of an educated and thinking democracy—and it was only through the sympathy and support of such bodies that the association had had so much success in the Waikato. To a continuance of that sympathy and support the association confidently looked forward.

Mr Crawley supported the request and moved that a vote of £2 2s (the same as last year) be made. He said that at Puahue good work was being ing done, and he understood that at Te Rore similar results were being obtained. The W.E.A. is doing splendid work, and every encouragement should be given to enable the Association to extend its activities. Mr Wilson seconded, and it was warmly supported. The donation was accordingly agreed to.
