ART UNIONS POPULAR

STATE LOTTERY QUESTION

Over 80 applications for the holding of art unions are now in the hands of the Government, and the four permits granted, and still unexpired, will keep lotteries running until next April. Although nothing official has been said, it is likely that a move will be made in the near futiure to press ' Cabinet to consider the institution of a State lottery. There are many who believe that this would be a suitable way to raise money, particularly as New Zealand is sending large!sums overseas for investment im sweepstakes of various kinds. Tlieiques-, tion has been raised frequently in the' House of Representatives, and there is a large body of opinion in favour of a State lottery. The views of Cabinet Ministers are not known, although at least one believes that the State should derive some more revenue that it does from the art unions. The point involves a question of policy, but there is reason to believe that Cabinet may turn its attention to the art unions in its search for more revenue at present, in spite of the fact that only recently it was decided to impose an art onion tax.
