Barelegged American girl tourists created a sensation on the Liverpool waterside when they disembarked from the Cunard liner Athenia, carrying their silk stockings in their " grips."
Having defied convention during the isolation of an Atlantic trip, and discarded rich silk hose, which are *a feature of well-dressed American women, those girls decided to continue their tour barelegged.
They pledged themselves not to cover their ankles either in London, Berlin, or Paris, even if the heatwave passes.
"This is the debut of the barelegged American girl tourists," one of them, a college student, said " and a great deal of cogitation preceded dur unconventional deportment. " But now that we have kicked over the traces we shall revel in our freedom, and shall not wear stockings again until the Statue of Liberty looms on our horizon. " So when we see Liberty we shall lose our liberty."
