BASKETBALL

TE AWAMUTU’S FIRST GAME. The recently-formed Te Awamutu Old Girls’ Athletic Club had its first basketball match on Wednesday afternoon, when the opponents were Pirongia Club, at Albert Park. Miss C. Pratt, of Kihikihi, refereed. The visitors sioon proved themselves the better combination, and at half-time had scored four goals, while they kept the opposition at bay. Keeping up the attack, scores came steadily for Pirongia, until they had a tally of thirteen when the final whistle sounded. Te Awamutu could not score at all. Scorers for Pirongia were Mrs Smith (6) and Misses R. Bell (4) and Mac Ewan (3). The locals tried hard to score, but the defence was too sound, added to which was the inexperience of Te Awamutu’s goalers. Time after time they essayed to land the ball in the ring, but missed. Pirongia combined well, passing cleverly and placing the leather in the hands of a goaler for an easy effort. The local players have not yet had much opportunity for practice, but yesterday’s game should prove invaluable, and by consistent application to learning and practising the finer points of the game they will yet be a formidable combination. It was stated on the ground yesterday that Mrs A. Cook, a former clever exponent of the game, had consented to coach Te Awamutu team, and this should be a factor tending toward better results. Practices are to be continued almost every evening, while matches with other teams are being arranged. The big score against them yesterday has not quashed their enthusiasm. KORAKONUI V. TOKANUI. On Wednesday afternoon Tokanui Basketball Club’s team journeyed to Korakonui to play a return match with that club. Beautiful weather favoured the players and a very enjoyable and interesting game ended in a win for the local team, the score being 12 points to 6. A dainty afternoon tea was served and appreciated by all.
