RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE FINLAY CUP MATCH. ARRANGEMENTS FOR SATURDAY'S GAME. The threat of a deadlock in connection with playing the challenge for the Finlay Cup next Saturday at one o'clock (to enable supporters of the game to listen-in afterwards to the broadcast of the fourth Test match) appears certain to be obviated, following discussions at Hamilton yesterday. After Waipa Union's position and desires had been made clear, the secretary of the Morrinsville Union (Mr C. Mclntyre) said he would consult with his fellow executive members and he indicated that every effort would be made to meet the position. It meant a good deal of inconvenience in getting their representative team to Te Awamutu at so early an hour, but Waipa supporters could rest assured that Morrinsville would do its best to comply. A PRACTICE GAME. The Waipa rep. fifteen to play Morrinsville reps, next Saturday for the Finlay Cup, indulged in a very useful practice game yesterday afternoon at Waikeria, when they were pitted against Waikeria's strongest team. The play was not up to standard in the earlier stages, the forwards particularly failing to act with the driving force that won the game against Cambridge a few weeks ago. However, as yesterday's game proceeded, the Waipas were seen to more advantage, and at times the combination was all that could be desired. The game ended in favour of the reps.- by 19 points to 6. TARANAKI DEFEATS WAIKATO. The Taranaki Rugby team defeated Waikato by 17 points to 11 after a hard game at -Rugby Park, yesterday afternoon. There was a small attendance. Rain in the morning had made the ground heavy, but only one heavy shower fell during the game. The scores hardly give a fair indication of the run of the play and Waikato was unlucky not to score more points. Taranaki owed its victory principally to the fine work of the pack in the scrums and line-outs and the resolute tackling by the backs, who were called upon frequently to step rushes by the Waikato backs. Waikato was unfortunate on several occasions through bad handling by the backs spoiling good chances of scoring. The home forwards more than held their own in the loose. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. The following are the entries for the seven-a-side tournament at Albert Park next Saturday, between teams from district primary schools:—Pirongia A., Pirongia 8., Te Awamutu North, Te Awamutu South, Te Awamutu C, Parawera, Kihikihi, Pokuru, Te Rahu, Ohaupo, Paterangi, Te Kawa, Convent, Korakonui, Hairini.
