EXHIBITS AT SHOWS

N.Z. DAIRY COMPANY'S DECISION.

RESTRICTION TO OWN DISTRICT Resentment at the attitude of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., in refusing to allow its manag- ( ers to exhibit at any shows outside the company's district was expressed at Tuesday's meeting of the general. committee of the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which\™ had approached the company in an endeavour to obtain exhibits of its products at shows in Palmerston North. A further letter received indicated that the company intended to adhere to the attitude adopted. In its letter, the company pointed out that, while it was always anxious to assist agricultural and pastoral associations wherever possible, there were circumstances which rendered it inadvisable for its factories to be allowed to exhibit at shows' outside those in its own district. Firstly, with numerous factories under the company's control, general permission to exhibit would result in a large quantity of butter being distributed far and wide throughout the North Island. The follow-up and other work dealing with butter _after a show Would amiount to a big job in the company's case. Further, there always was the possibility of butter deteriorating in quality through exposure in transit. The company's experience in the past was that the work entailed through allowing managers a free hand in exhibiting was certainly not worth while. Another aspect of the matter was that the company desired to obtain a uniform high standard in its output, and not to concentrate upon obtaining a few boxes of high grade butter for exhibition purposes. Mr J. M. Johnston said it was the most paltry letter he had ever read. It was anything but right. The company, he thought, was not studying the interests of the Dominion in not ) showing butter outside their own sphere. As far as distance went exhibits had been received from North Auckland and the far South Island. He moved a motion that a letter be forwarded deprecating the company's action.

A motion was passed deprecating the stand the company had taken.
