DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS

SLIGHT INCREASE IN FEES.

CHANGE IN TEEM PERIODS. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. A slight increase in the fees payable by other than free place pupils attending the secondary department of district high schools was approved by the Auckland Education Board yesterday. The Education Department notified that in view ! of the fact that the school year was now divided into three terms instead of quarters, it was necessary to revise the fees, and it, was proposed to make them £1 a term, reducible to 15s if paid within 30 days after the commencement of the term.

The chairman, Mr A. Burns, said the fee was now 10s a quarter cash, so that the year's charge would be £2 ss, instead of £2.

Mr R. Hoe said so far from increasing the fee he would be in flavour of abolishing it altogether. Mr T. U. Wells said it was necessary to give the proficiency examination some value, as it would encourage parents to keep their children regularly at school. In its letter, the department further stated the corresponding fees payable in secondary schools were £4, reducible to £3 10s, but as there were few pupils paying fees in district high schools it was not proposed to bring the fees into line with those of secondary schools.
