HOSPITAL FOR MAORIS
THE OPENING CEREMONY.
(By Telegraph. Press Association.) HAMILTON, Monday. A hospital where sick Maoris, who would probably die through sheer lack of desire to live in European establishments, may be nursed back to health and strength by their own people has been completed at Ngaruawahia. Money was freely contributed by East Coast natives, and, encouraged and helped by Sir Apirana Ngata, Princess Te Puea Herangi has seen the building erected. Numerous natives, both young men and women, have bsen employed in preparing the native decorations, consisting of elaborate carvings, panels of tuku tuku work, and rafters painted in a variety of weird designs. All the carvings, panels and paintings represent stories of Maori folk lore. The hospital will be officially opened, probably by the Right Hon. J. G. Ccates, at a great gathering of natives to be held at Ngaruawahia on the morning of the Ngaruawahia Regatta on March 16.
