THE C.O.D. SYSTEM

GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE

EXPLAINED.

An explanation of the attitude of the Government towards the eash-on-deljvery system in operation in the postal service was given by Mr F. Lye, M.P., at last meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce. Mr Lye said he was one of a committee of 21 appointed by the United party before the election to draw up the policy to be followed. While it was impossible to incorporate every plank in a policy which is only a general system of measures, the conference gave sympathetic hearing to Mr Lye when he advocated the abolition of the cash-on-delivery system, and and agreed that it was quite unfair that the Post and Telegraph Department should be the instrument of so wrongful a trading system. An assurance was given that the paity would, if given an opportunity, fight to have the scheme abolished. Mr Lye added that there was a move among branches of the Farmers’ Union to have the system continued, and that organisation had commenced a cajmpaign against its abolition. He could hardly understand that attitude. He felt sure that steps would be taken in the near future to prevent a continuance of the cash-on-d ©livery system. The Chamber decided to thank the Government for its attitude towards the cash-on-delivery system, and also for its stated intention of abolishing State interference in private enterprise.
