KING COUNTRY ITEMS. (Own Correspondent), . At the annual meeting of Anglicans, in St. Bride’s Church, Otorohanga, the vicar, the Rev. Traharne Phillips, presided oyer a good attendance of his parishioners. Mr H. G. Corbett, the retiring people’s warden, read and explained accounts for the past year, which were adopted. Mr W. J. C. Patterson was chosen by the vicar, as his warden and Mr Clive Tucker was elected people’s warden. The following vestrymen were appointed:—Messrs Howard Baker, G. England, T. H. Murphy, R. T. Rhodes, H. J. Osmond and V. N. Stagg. Mr C. W. Harte was appointed auditor, while the appointment of secretary was left over until next meeting of the vestry. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring officers and to Mrs J. Glenie (secretary). A resolution was passed by the ladies present that the vestry should consist of men only. Mr William Martin, known throughout the colonies some thirty years ago as “Plugger Bill,” the world’s champion cycle rider, was a visitor to Otorohanga during last week, where he renewed acquaintances with old friends of the racing tracks. Mr Martin has travelled the world many times, and after the lapse of 30 years is almost as athletic looking as in the day’s of long ago. The Otorohanga shingle industry has revived considerably during the recent weeks, and the plants are working full time to cope with increasing demand. The many Otorohanga and district friends of Mr Lewis Edwin Henry, will regret to hear of his death, at the Waikato Hospital, on Saturday evening. Mr Henry had been in business in Maniapoto Street for several years. His health failed, he sold out, and entered the sanatorium at Waipukurau, where he remained for a long period. He afterwards sought relief in the Blue Mountains of Australia, but was soon compelled to again sell out owing to the unsatisfactory state of his health. Returning to New Zealand, he re-visited Otorohanga, but later, was forced to enter the hospital. Mr Henry was a popular man with all classes. He was aged 52 years, and leaves a wife but no family. Mrs Henry is at present at the Waikato Hospital. The recent “Paddy’s Market” (to raise money for cocoa rooms on the new school site) brought in £45 towards the funds. Most of this was received from the sale of produce sent in by the settlers. A pleasing feature of the day’s exhibitions, was the drawings and paintings of Miss Kathleen Lurman, eldest daughter of Mrs and Mrs H." A. Lurman, of Rangiatea. These were arranged around the walls of the Town Hall Chambers, which they fully occupied, and the works of this talented young . lady wejv> much admired. An oil painting —almost life size—of the local celebrity, Mr W. Baucke, (“W.8.”), (author of “Where the White Man Treads,” and other works) was the star item of attention, and Miss Lurman was the recipient of many congratulations on having produced, such a life-like painting. Tenders for the new class-rooms on the High School Campus closed yesterday (Monday) but the name of the successful tenderer has not yet been announced. Sportsmen report game fairly plentiful, and shooting arrangements are already made for May Ist, when the season opens. Duck are very plentiful on the swamps and lagoons of the Orahiri, while quail are abundant in the back country. The report of the Otorohanga Rugby delegates to the conference held at Te Kuiti on the 19th instant was considered at a meeting of the management committee, held on Saturday evening. Mi" C. A. .Bowler (chairman) presided. Regarding the cup competitions it was resolved that inter-club matches should commence on May 5 th. The opening of the football season here, took place on Saturday afternoon, when seven-a-side games were played. "Senior and junior teams, representative of all the clubs in the district competed. There was a. large attendance and the ground was in excellent condition. Judging by the initial enthusiasm displayed the local sub-union may look forward with confidence to successful season’s play. Kio Kio seniors defeated the Otorohanga A team by 3 to nil. The local High School juniors defeated Honikiwi A by 11 points to 5.
