THREE S.M. COURT

SITTING AT OTOROHANGA.'

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday, Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., presiding. LICE INFECTED SHEEP.

J. D. Anderson, stock inspector, of Te Kuiti, proceeded against W. J. Bowyer for having exposed for sale 44 sheep, at the Otorohanga saleyards, on March 7th, which were infected with lice. Defendant, in evidence, stated that two sales previously he had offered the sheep by public auction, but as they failed to reach the reserve he took them home. They were then clean. Had never been in a court before. Was always careful to have his sheep dipped. Fined 20s and costs 10s. Mrs S. A. Catsr, charged with offering 15 infected sheep for sale by auction on the same date, was fined 20s and costs 12s. John Lawerence Cowern was charged with offering 60 lice infected sheep by auction. The inspector in evidence stated that all of these sheep were heavily infected with lice. Defendant stated that when he recently bought the sheep at Taumarunui they were perfectly clean'. Fined 30s and costs 12s.

William Hogg, stock buyer, of Te Knuiti, was charged with exposing 48 lambs for sale, three of which were inspected by Mr Anderson and were found to be lousy. Mr Trapski, for defendant, stated that although Mr Hogg had one previous conviction for exposing infected sheep, it was not fair,to consider this, as at that time the sheep infected were the property of the Te Kuiti Racing Club, of which Mr Hogg was a member only, and not the owned of the sheep. His client bought and sold many thousands of sheep throughout the year, and in the present case he';"had thought that his stockmen were satisfied that the sheep were clean. His Worship stated that stock owners must thoroughly understand that they cannot expose unclean sheep fen?'sale. It is imperative in the interests of other stock owners that ' only thoroughly clean sheep are yarded at auction sales—or indeed in any public place where other sheep are mustered. He would not take into consideration the previous conviction against Hogg, but would fine him 20s and costs 10s on the present charge. CIVIL CASES.
