A TRANSVAAL GOLDFIELD
Dr. Vaughan of the Union .Geological Survey, has presented a paper to the Geological Society of South Africa indicating .the possible existence of a new and extensive gdld-bearing area of considerable extent in the Transvaal. Dr. Vaughan gives the first detailed account of a discovery made some months ago on a farm at Waaikraall, 25 mites norh-east of Ru'stenherg, and forty-two milles northwest of Pretoria. The discovery of gold-bear-ing melanooeritic ligneous rock, ranging in thickness for 14 feet to 3 leet 6indhes. The gold contents of the ore-bearing rock vary within wtide limits, the' highest value being found in the middle part of the sill. The., richest ore so far opened up yielded over 6 oz. to a short ton at a thickness of 4ft 6in. The ore-bear-ing rock has so far been traced over a distance of 308 feet, and probably extends further in both 'directions. Similar gold-bearing rock is reported to exist under the same geologicall conditions on farms at Pot-g'leter's-Hoogte and Zoutpansdrift, situated respectively four miles au.l nine miles from Waaikrall. These relports yet Hack confirmation; if authentic, they would indlicate a potential golld bearing area of considerable extent following the line of contact between the norite and granite rocks of the buisfcveld complex.
