AMERICAN WOMAN CHARGED. ( THE CONSUL INTERVENES. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. With head bowed, and weeping cdpiously, an American woman named Sylvia Webb stood before IMr H: A. Young, S.M., to-day, charged with haying' ob-. tained goods to the value of £lO6 13s 3d from Ballantyne and Co., by fraud, representing that she was “Mrs 'Hunt, of Chatham Islands.” Detective-Sergeant Young asked for a f remand to August 3rd, but Mr Atack, for accused, asked, that it be until to-mo.rrow only. Mr Atack (said hb'had been instructed to act by tbe American Consul. The woman was an American citizen and her hofsband was now in Honolulu. She had been in hospital here. The Aorangi was due to leave for America in August, and the Consul said there was a big chance that accused would not meet her husband If she did not catch the Aorangi. Mr Atack: The Consul advises me that arrangements have been made for acoujsed to meet her husband in Honolulu, and if there is a chance of dismissal in the Lower Court the woman should have it, iso that she can get away to meet her husband. At this stage the case was adjourned until this afternoon.
