“THE COUNTRY BUMPKINS”

ENTERTAIN THE TOWN TOFFS. One of the most successful events of the kind yet held in Te Awamutu eventuated at the 'Town Hall last evening, when .the “country bumpkins” entertained well over 200 “town toffs” at an “at home.” The hall had been converted into an up-to-date ballroom, gloriously decorated -and conveniently arranged, with special lighting effects and a floor that be tokened much work in preparation. Crawford’s Jazz Band, from Hamilton, dispensed music to the delight of all, and the 200 couples - danced until the small hours of this morning. A special feature of the entertainment was a Gipsy camp fire, round which about ‘forty gaily-attired gipsies sang appropriate refrains, eighteen young women dancing the cachuca while the menfolk sang. •It was a pretty conception. Another feature was the supper; the “bumpkins” have set a high standard in that department, and richly deserve the warm encomiums passed by guests Those in charge of arrangements for the hall 'are to he congratulated upon the success of their efforts, and upon the harmony prevailing throughout the preparation of the details. The secretaries, the Misses WallaceAmd Focke, were ably supported by a committee of enthusiasts, while a special band of enthusiasts, took the onerous duties of arranging the dances and introducing guests—duties that "mere men” often fail to carry out satisfactorily.
