'butter is now quoted at 166 s to 168 s per cwt, as against 170 s la:4t week; and this is the second occasion on which New Zealand butter has gone below 170 s. The market is reported depressed. It is difficult to account for the fall and the depression, for importls have been less during each of the past. s months. The imports of butter into the United Kingdom during the past six months and for the corresponding period, of last year are given below:

The figures show a shrinkage of 286,000 cwt, or 14,300 tons, so that the drop cannot be attributed to expanding supplies. It is probable that the spending powers of the consumers are restricted, and they are therefore buying less or it may be that the quantities held in store to maintain values are now being released and are depressing the market. The cheesie market is also depressed, and prices are'about ?Js per cwt lower. Canadian competition has affected the cheese market, and both New Zealand, and. Canadian sorts are at the isame level of values.
