(By Telegraph, -r- Press Association.) DUNFJDIN, This Day. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce resolved! to call a public, meeting and to do everything ,lo .strengthen Sir Joseph. Ward's request for a subsidy in connection' with South Island shipping. The chairman stated that the present position in figures for the year was that '2lO vessels arrived in the North Island, with 40,566 passengers, and sixteen arrived in the South Island with 1883 passengers. They were heartily in sympathy Avith Sir Joseph* Ward's request for a suWsidy for shipping to the South Island The North Island enjoyed two subsidised services, and had enjoyed those fifteen or twenty years ago. when the South Island had the main shipping ports. It wals therefore quite reasonable for the South Island to ask for assistance now.
