BALLISTITE CUP. UNITED AND TE AWAMUTU WIN. The chief attraction in Albert Park on 'Saturday afternoon was the t commencement of the knockout round fo r the Ballistite Cup in the senior grade. Owing to Te Kawa withdraAving from the competition Pi'rongia had a bye. United met Rovers and Te Awamutu met Parawera. The grounds were slippery after recent showers, which no doubt contributed to the poor stan dard of play in all matches.

Te Awamutu and jParawera met on No 1 ground, the former only fielding 13 men. The game opened with straggling play and 'from a forward scramble Tahi secured and dived over to score for Para /era. Before half time Te Awamutu esualised as the result of a pens.cy goal by Kay. In the second half play improved a good deal hut was much below the standard displayed by these teams in their previous meeting. Parawera took the lead again as the result of a try by Crowley after a very determined run. Parawera looked to have the game safe but in the last quarter Te Awamutu combined better and as a result scored 9 points—tries by Clarke and Bremner and a penalty goal by Kay—while Parawera failed to increase their score, the game ending Te Awamutu 12, Parawera 6. Mr S. A. McNamara refereed. On No. 2 ground Uniteds brought off a surprise by defeating Rovers by 6 points to 3. Uniteds only fielded 12 men while Rovers were aiso one short. The game was uninteresting throughout as an exhibition of rugby and there was no score until the last quarter. Rovers had been having the best of matters up to this stage until Shepherd secured near the halfway line and cutting straight through his opponents scored a good try between the posts but the kick was a .failure. Shortly afterwards Maddern followed up a long kick and taking the ball over the line at his toes gave United a six points lead with only about five minutes to go. Rovers tried desperately to retrieve the game and L. Wenham was successful in scoring a try. Time was too short, however, and the scores 'remained. United 6 Rovers 3 when 'the whistle sounded. Mr T. Crump refereed. The three teams remaining in the competition are United, Te Awamutu and Pirongia, thus necessitating a semi-final. The game between Ohaupb and Puahue juniors 'resulted in a win for Ohaupo by 6 points to 3. The teams were evenly matched and although the play was mostly of an ordinary nature it was keen and close throughout. Hogan and Caulton scored tries for Ohaupo, R. [Parish securing Puahue's try. Mr G. Melrose refereed. Playing at Parawera, Uniteds defeated the home team by 25 points to 3. The display was very ordinary, and the Paraweras were minus the help of several of their most useful players. WAIPA V. MANIAPOTO.
