PIRONGIA ROAD

TO BE IMPROVED AND' SURFACED. The Borough Council was asked hy the -works committee last evening to accept the engineer's report on a way of improving that portion of Pirongia Road that ife within the borough boundary- The report is as follows: "The length proposed is from the railway to the borough boundary, 34 chains. The width specified in the schedule is 18 feet. It is proplsed t work to a width of 15 feet, as in Kihikihi Road. Prom the railway to the far end of the approach to the proposed overhead bridge it is proposed to asphalt about 12 feet wide and about three inches thick on the course of the present metalling. As all thte work may be buried in the next ten year s when the overhead bridge is erected, it is proposed to alter the course of the metal to the 1 centre of the roadway, as would otherwise be necessary. This work will be done at about £2S~ per chain. From t.he end of the railway embankment to the borough "boundiarv it is proposed to lay an asphalted course of 4_ inches thick to a width of 15 feet. This section will cost about £35 per chain. The cost will be as follows: Eight chains at £2B, £224; 26 chains at £35, £910; contingencies, strengthening thin places banking up, etc., say, £266; total, £I4OO. The amount of the vote for this road is £2712. so there will be a considerable saving. The material required to be purchased, will be U-inch metal and small metal, costing £450; and asphal, costing £400; total, £BSO. The rest is in hand on the ground."
