THE OPEN-AIR LIFE

THE GARDEN AiS A BEAUTY PARLOUR. Tomatoes are very useful for whitening sallow skins and removing stain 9 from hands which have been neglected. A ripe tomato cut in half and rubbed over the face and neck, allowing the juice to 1 dry in will quickly whiten sallow skin. If the juice be left overnight the progress will be much quicker. Cucumber is a recognised ingredient in many lotions and creams, and is recommended iby beauty experts for its good action on the complexion, as well as on the hands and arms. A lotion which is recommended by “A Countrywoman” in an English paper as very beneficial to the skin can be made thus: Cut up one small cucumber and crush by pounding in an earthenware bowl in order to extract the juice. Measure this and allow 4oz. of elderflower water to every lloz. of cucumber juice. Shake well together and add loz. of simple tincture of benzoin, pouring in a few drops only at a time and shaking well after each addition. Cork tightly and, when required, apply to the skin with a pad of cotton wool. Lettuce compresses are said to be very good for allaying the irritation caused by sunburn. To apply, wash the leaves in icy cold water and cover the affected parts with them. Lavender flowers and white wine vinegar make a delightful toilet vinegar which can be added to the bath. Allow two or three handfuls of the lavender flowers to every pint of vinegar and.place in an earthenware jar. Put the jar on the back of a stove or a range where it will keep slightly warm, and leave it there for three oi four days, then strain and bottle. 'Strawberries can be turned to excellent account as beautifiers. If the teeth look dark and discoloured, cut a strawberry in half and rub the inside over the teeth. Allow the juice to remain for about five minutes, then cleanse the teeth with warm water to which a pinch of bicarbonate of 9oda has been added. A cut strawberry rubbed over the face immediately after washing and drying the skin will whiten and remove slight sunburn. For a badly sunburnt face rub the juice well into the skin, leave it on for half an hour, then wash off with warm water to which a few drops of simple tincture of benzoin have been added. Do Hot use soap.
