NEW BACON PRICES
CAUSE OE PRESENT BOOM. IRISH v. DANISH. The following wholesale prices for bacon were fixed at the London Provision Exchange on Firiday morning, says the Belfast Telegraph of September 'sth: — Irish bacon, 147 s to 14Ss per cwt; Danish, 140 s; Canadian, 132 s to 1365; American, ll2Ss to 130 s. These prices will last until next Friday. It is likely that there will be a drop in the prices owing to an increased supply from Denmark. Prices will tend to fall in the autumn. At one of the largest London stores the following explanation of the position was given:—“There is no doubt a genuine shortage, and it is simply a question of supply and demand. The supply at present does not equal the demand, and prices are bound to rise. It is probable, however, that the limit has been reached in 'high prices, and that there will soon be a falling tendency. When prices are so high the public reduce their orders and the demand falls. This rise in price is quite temporary. Retail prices cannot go much higher, and some firms will probably make no further increase. At this time of the year the supply of bacon is always short. It is the period of the Danish harvest, when everything else goes to the wall. The harvest lasts from three weeks to a month, and bacon exports from Denmark are during that time always less. The supplies are exceptionally short this year because so little bacon is coming from Russia. On account of the shortage in Denmark the Germans are taking the Russian supplies—possibly paying higher prices. American and Canadian bacon has been very short for a long time. In America the bacon habit has been deve'oped to such an extent that there is very little for export—in fact both Canada and America have become buyers of bacon in Denmark and elsewhere. Not nearly so much bacon is coming here norv from Ireland.”
