THE MAKURA’S CREW

CLASH WITH FRENCH GENDARMES (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. It is alleged that three members of the Makura’s crew were severely handled by French gendarmes at Papeete. One, Bruce Anderson, had his face badly smashed in and teeth knocked out. The men’s story is that the party of three Were returning to their ship and one the way of a gendarme. The latter immediately struck him and upon the other arriving fresh gendarmes ran up and beat the men badly. The officers further assailed them at the police station. Captain Worhall of the Makura says he asked the Union company’s local agent for a report on the affair, but had not yet received It. Unfortunately owing to the bad behaviour of some of the sailors visiting the port there was a feud between the police and seamen and probably the innocent suffered.
