OTOROHANGA NEWS
ITEMS FROM KING COUNTRY. OTOROHANGA A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. (Resident Representative.) There was another mishap between two motors on the Te Kuiti road lastFriday when a car going south/collided with a lorry coming north. }No one was hurt but an elderly lady in the car suffered from shock and had to have medical attention. Through having a weak team the Otorohanga cricket Club were badly beaten by the ‘Railways’ (Te Kuiti) on Saturday. The Otorohanga team scored 37 (of which Fortescue provided 16) and the Railways 137. The civil case of Luirman v. the Otorohanga County Council (£516 for compensation for land taken for road) is definitely set down tor hearing at Hamilton Supreme Court on Thursday December 3rd. Thus writes the special commissioner of the ‘Herald’ anent Otorohanga: I broke my journey down the Main Trunk line at various places, the first of them being Otorohanga. This, the most northerly town in the King Country, is advancing steadily and surely. Ten years ago it was a straggling little village. To-day it is a solid town. One can see by the substantial public buildings, by its tanks and business houses, that men have confidence in its future, and I do not see how anyone with common sense can " view the surroundings of this once famous Maori Pa without feeling assured that that it must go on advancing rapidly. As I have already pointed out, the northern part of the King Country is blessed with a very large extent of easily-worked, arable land, which means, generally speaking, that it must become a district of small and well-worked farms. This not only leads to dense rural population and great production of agricultural wealth, but it also means increase of production in the outlying hill country because, where root crops and fodder crops can be grown in the vicinity of hill pastures, the hills can be made to carry stock to their fullest capacity with the certainty that when either winter scarcity or summer drought occurs root crops and fodder crops are available for stock.
