THE MAHENO HOLD-UP
NO CREW AVAILABLE (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The Union Steamship Company’s intercolonial passenger steamef Maheno is still at the wharf owing to inability to obtain a crew, and the departure of the vessel, which was fixed on Saturday for 11 a.m. to-day, has been further .postponed til 3 p.m. today. The trouble on the Maheno, which resulted in the crew coming out, was reported in a cable message from Sydney stating that the Maheno was delayed 26 hours there through members of the crew not putting in an appearance, and when they did come aboard they left t'he vessel again. Ultimately they attacked a trimmer who had refused to join them in quitting their ship. Their victim, a war veterin, was severely maltreated, and had to flee in a launch. His papers and war medals were flung overboard. The cable news has been fully confirmed by a “Dominion” reporter from inquiries aboard the Maheno. When the vessel arrived at Wellington certain members of the crew were discharged, and on this account the rest of the stokehold hands and sailors gave notice. Various grievances against a certain person aboard the Maheno were made by some of the sailors, but it is stated that no justification could be found in these.
