A customer of a Dunedin grocery shop is at present bewailing the fact that he was a little careless in the matter Of handing over a cheque for the payment of his purchases (says the Dunedin Star). He placed a cheque for over £6 on the counter just as the salesman was about to wrap up the goods, and then thought no more about the matter until the question of payment arose. The unfortunate customer was certain that he had placed the cheque in a certain spot under the eye of thei salesman, but a thorough search of the counter failed to bring it to light. It slowly dawned on both that a third party must have intervened, and the customer, in order to make certain that no one profited from what must have been rather a daring and cunningly concealed exploit, rushed to the bank to stop payment. Much to his astonishment, however, he discovered that the cheque had been cashed just about two minutes before he arrived, and he is regretting the fact that he did not take the advice of a friend and get in,to communication with the bank per telephone. An extraordinary feature of the affair is that the cheque must have been cashed within a minute or two of its loss being discovered. The shon is situated within,., five minutes' waik of the bank.
