SALE OF WORK

PRESBYTERIANS' SUCCESSFUL

EFFORT.

LADIES' GUILD GRATIFIED.

The Ladies' Guild of St. Andrews' (Presbyterian) Church conducted a highly successful bazaar and sale of work yesterday afternoon and evening in the Parish Hall. Rev. W. T. Todd acted as supervisor and he must have been gratified at the sterling effort put up by the ladies of the congregation to raise funds by which to meet current expenses in connection with Church affairs. The various stalls were well supplied with a variety of saleable goods displayed in attractive style, and there was an enthusiastic bevy of saleswomen at each stall ready to meet all demands from the public. Mr Todd addressed the patrons at 2 p.m. yesterday and invited full support to show appreciation of the Guild's effort. The ladies had worked hard and fully deserved success. Continuing he referred to the unavoidable absence of some of the Church's keenest supporters, notably Dr. Henderson, who was present in spirit, but had forwarded £lO as a practical evidence of his appreciation. The announcement was received with applause. Mr Todd then called upon his Worship the Mayor ((Mr L. G. Armstrong) to formally open the sale of work.

Mr Armstrong said it gave him much pleasure to note the preparations of the ladies. Truly they were the soul of the church, and also the driving force, for whenever funds were needed they responded nobly. He was confident the present effort would be successful, for it was noteworthy that in his experience of public life he had never yet assisted at a bazaar or sale of work that had proved to be a failure. He hoped complete clearance of the large stocks in each stall would be made, and thus the church funds would be placed in good shape. (Applause). The various stalls are in charge of the following:.— Plainwork: Mesdames W. H. Mandeno, Kidd. Civil, Edwards and Bruce.

Produce. —Mesdames H. Mandeno, A S. Wallace, G. Hall,' Locke, Coulter and Flay. Fancywork.—Mesdames C. W. Rickit, and A. F. Walker and Miss Mandeno. Sweets. —Misses Grant 'and Neild, with members of the Girls' Guild. Cakes.—Mesdames Christie and Ross.

Art.—Mrs Neilson, Mrs Todd and Miss E. Mandeno. Refreshments.—Mesdames McCarroll, Grant, Morris and Bryant. There was a satisfactory demand throughout the afternoon, and in the evening the public again attended in goodly numbers, despite the heavy downpour of rain. Several very much appreciated musical items were rendered during the evening. Mr G. Dalton and party presented quite a variety of instrumental items, Miss Edwards sang effectively, and a party of girls held a Gypsy Camp, introducing vocal numbers that greatly pleased. During an interval the moderator of the church, Rev. Alex. Hardie, (Paterangi) was called upon to make a presentation to Mrs Todd, who is leaving for the south after p, sojourn in Te Awamutu for several months. Mr Hardie said Mrs Todd had proved a very able helpmate to her husband and | much of the latter's success in ministering to the Presbyterian flock in this town and neighbourhood could be' credited to his wife's enthusiasm and tact. She had entered into the church work and organised the guilds with very evident success. He had pleasure in asking Mrs Todd to accept from the congregation a serviceable travelling tu*; and a purse containing the wherewithal to purchase - some other memento of her association with the ' Presbyterians of Te Awamutu. (Applause). Opportunity was also taken to thank .all who had worked so enthusiastic'ally to make the bazaar the success that it had proved. It was mentioned that the total receipts will exceed £l5O.
