OTOROHANGA NEWS

ITEMS FROM KING COUNTRY.

(Resident Representative)

In the senior matches of the Maniaj)Oto Rugby Union on Saturday the results were as follow: Otorohanga 27 v. Huia 0, Hangatiki 8 y. Pio Pio 6, Nehenehe 10 v. Mangapeehi 9. The northern division junior matches decided were: Huia 6 v. Hangatiki 5, Otorohanga 3 v. Otewa 0. Otewa forfeited to Kio Kio. The Presbyterian community tendered a send-off to Mr and Mrs 'Rowland and family on Saturday evening. The church hall was crowded, but if there had been more notice of Mr Rowland's leaving for Cambridge so soon there is no doubt that he and Mrs Rowland would have been accorded a public farewell in the Town Hall. The Rev. J. D. McFarlane presided and paid tribute to the social activities of the lady and gentleman in question during their sojourn here. On behalf of the Presbyterian community Mr McFarlane presented souvenirs to Mr and Mrs Rowland as well as their, son and daughter, and wished them every blessing and success an their new sphere. .During the eVening songs were given by Messrs R. Bell, Birkett, and Selby, as well as by Mrs Carthew and Miss P. Atkinson. Little Miss Rust enchanted the audience with an excellently-rendered recitation, and Rust's orchestra gave three numbers, which embellished the first class programme. Mr and Mrs Rowland and family left for Cambridge on Sunday last. Miss Patterson, 8.A., assistant school teacher at the Otorohangai District High School, has been appointed to the Featherston District High School, and will leave here at the end of this month. Her leaving here will be a distinct loss to Otorohanga educational circles.

The Catholic ladies' committee are preparing to hold a Paddy's market in 'aid of the church funds next Friday ■week, Turner's hall having been secured for the occasion. Among the various industries which have developed of late years there is tb,at of pig raising. During the last twelve months over 4000 pigs have been bought at and sent away from Otorohanga by one firm, their value being estimated at close to £II,OOO. This is, of course, one of the side issues of the dairying industry, and indicates the prominence of the district as a butter-supplying factor. A motor car accident occurred on Sunday morning on the Te Kuiti road about two miles out. A car going to the Caves when turning a bend came upon a mob of sheep, and the driver of the car apparently lost his head, for he drove up the steep bank, and the car was overturned. A lady had her arm bruised, but no other serious damage was clone, and the car was uprighted and was able to continue its journey.

The news of the long-expected death of Mr Massey was received here by all irrespective of party with regret, and the expressions of grief at the loss New Zealand has sustained were heartfelt. One person who has known five of his predecessors as Prime Ministers both well and intimately, expressed his opinion that in the death of Mr Massey not <gnly has New 'Zealand suffered an irreparable loss but also the Empire, Personally he says Mr Massey was without reproach both as a private individual and politically. Strangers, otherwise tourists, while praising the principal roads around Otorohanga, which have been made solely of shingle, deplore the many pot-holes on the main road from Kihikihi. On inquiry I find that the major part of these complaints refer to that portion of the road from Te Awamutu and running through both the borough and Waipa counties. It is true that though the Otorohanga portion of the road has been repaired this season there are a few such holes existing, and the only way to obviate this occurring is for the road to be constantly maintained. In the old days there used to be permanent surfacemen employed, and dumps of metal were kept on the road sides. Why should not tihs system obtain now?
