DOG TAX

IS REGISTRATION DESIRABLE ?

The question of whether it is desirable to continue the practice of annually registering dogs was under consideration at Monday's meeting of the Waipa County Council. 'The secretary, Waikato sub-provin-cial district of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, forwarded the following resolution, and asked for favourable consideration: " That the county councils be, approached with a view to having the dog tax abolished, as few dogs kept by farmers were for other than working purposes, and those councils not levying the tax, which in effect is an infinitesimal source of income, have found no appreciable increase in the dog nuisance." The chairman said Waipa's reason for ceasing collection of dog licenses 1 ! was chiefly because some people—the' honest ones —faok out licenses for their dogs, while other folk evaded the obligation. He thought the Farmers' Union should be advised that Waipa County Council does not impose or collect dog tax. Cr Peacocke asked what was the position of a Waipa county-owned dog being taken into a town or another county where licenses were necessary.

A member: Oh, he will be collared unless he has a collar on! 'Cr Peacocke: We had better leave old collars on our dogs, then.

Cr Saulbrey: Or else leave your dogs at home.
