DESTRUCTION of HAWTHORN.

(By Telegraph, Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Friday.

Following on the confirmed discovery of traces of fireblight in the North, a meeting of fruitgrowers and others interested was held last’ night, and was addressed by Mr P. Everett, Government orchard instructor. It was decided to ask the Agricultural Department to create a fruit area, with a radius of eight or ten miles, and that' such area come under the jurisdiction of the second schedule of the Act. This stipulates in regard to fireblight that all hawthorn within a fruit area must be trimmed, to fence high annually and kept from flowering.

BANK OFFICIAL CHARGED.

NELSON, Friday.

At Motueka Magistrate’s Court Thomas George Scott-Smith, a bank, official, was charged with having fraudulently converted to his own use money which should have been accounted for to the Bank of New Zealand at Motueka. The total sum involved was £499 9s 7d. The alleged offences range from November, 1923, to January last. After being formally charged accused was remanded to appear at Motueka on February 19th. Bail was granted, himself £l5O, and two sureties of £IOO each.
