CONTRACTOR DROWNED.

HIS ASSISTANT HAS NARROW ESCAPE.

(By Telegraph—Press Association), f TAIHAPE, This Day. Jfhe bridge at Ohutu collapsed and iS eighty 'feet into the river while being taken down yesterday afternoon. Mr D. De B. Compton the contractor, a widower aged 79 years, was thrown into the water and drowned before assistance arrived. His assistant, Samuel Miller, aged 46, whose wife and five children live at Masterton, went down with the wreckage, and was seriously injured. He was taken to Taihape hospital, but the extent of his injuries is not knew known. It is believed that Compton comes from Invercargili. Among his belongings was a gold medal presented by the late Hon. R. J. Seddon for life saving.
