OTOROHANGA NEWS.

ITEMS OF INTEREST. (District Representative.) Consolidated Schools. The Chairman of the Otorohanga School Committee has received the following telegram from the Minister of Education:-"! have been making full enquiries respecting proposed consolidation. 1 regret that the result of my enquiries shows that it is impossible to obtain private contracts tor the transport of the children. Ihe Department, in buying and running cars itself is, therefore, engaging in an experiment. Notwithstanding this fact I am prepared to make an experiment in one centre, either Pio Pio or Otorohanga. and I. have to-day communicated with the Auckland Education Board to make a decision as to which centre the Board recommends for consolidation. So soon as the Board's decision comes to hand the necessary steps will be taken" Mr McFarlane has replied: "Thanks for your information re consolidated school If Otorohanga is decided upon as centre committee will co-operate with the Department in making the experiment a success" There is a suggestion for tlie esj tablishment of a sheep fair in Otoro- ! hanga. A very plausible ambition, ! but 'one would think that the institution of the A. and P. Show as a "fact accompli." was sufficient to occupy the attention of the farmers for the present. The Otorohanga Band Committee has decided to promote a public pic- | nit: on Labour Day (22nd). The ga- ! thering will be held in Syme's bush. ! Otcwa Road, and given line weather there should lie a large patronage. There is to be a special meeting of the Otorohanga County Council tomorrow (Friday) for the purpose of considering the report, of the hydroelectric committee. A sub-committee I was appointed to draw up a report lin accordance with the decision of j the majority, but this sub-committee j not being unanimous, a report has j been published signed by those who voted for the Waitomo scheme as ! agains-l Te Awamutu, with the addition of Mr H. Rentier's name, who had been precluded from attending the final meeting. A small number of farmers attended the meeting called for yesterday to hear an address on the matter .of the j proposed Dairy Control Act from the I opposition point of view. .Mr J. E. ! Rolleston. M.P.. occupied the chair i and Mi- 1-:. Maxwell, of Opunake. was I Die speaker. He spoke in favour of j the Tooley Street system and conI demned the proposed Control Board J as it was not likely to be composed i of any but amateur business men. j The statement that the Tooley Street | firms bad expressed their willingness j to support the control scheme was hardly in accordance with fact. What I Tooley Street had said was thai, they would work to assist the movement I provided that each factory was alI lowed to consign their output of butter to any particular firm of their l own choice. He was against a Board i of amateur business men with unre- | strioted power and under no control.
