! MONTHLY .MEETING. I GENERAL BUSINESS TRANSACTED. The usual monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held at Ohaupo on Monday. Present, Crs D. S. Reid (chairman), C. M. Alexander, W. McGee, A. H. Storey, A. Livingstone, R. G. Speake, J. S. Fisher, S. C. Macky, E. H. Peacock and H. S. Reilly. "Save tJio Babies." The chairman, Auckland Citizens' Committee, asked for a donation towards the £15,000 being raised in the province to equip, furnish and endow a Karitane hospital in Auckland under the Royal U.Z. Plunket Society. It was stated that over £IO,OOO has been raised to date. A suggestion was made that the.. Council should enlist the help of its ratepayers by way of donations. The chairman recommended the worthiness of the appeal, but preferred to leave the appeal to private action. The letter was received. Revising Rating' Rolls. A very complete list of ratepayers in the vicinity of Hamilton Borough 1 was forwarded by the officer recently appointed by the Council for this purpose. He wrote: "I have sorted out the list with difficulty on account of not having proper maps, but having made a thorough search I am convinced that there are not many missed, if any."—Received. The clerk stated that the list was in the hands of the rate collector, who was checking same. A report would probably be available at next meeting. Assessment Court The Valuation Department advised that a sitting of the Assessment Court would be held at Auckland on September 17th to hear and determine objections to certain new valuations in the Waipa • County. Objections will also be heard re Waikato and Raglan counties, and it was suggested that Waipa should 'appoint the same assessor. Raglan County clerk advised that Mr Edward Morgan, of Onehunga, had been appointed to act for Raglan, and would probably act also for Waikato. Councillors expressed ignorance of the whole affair, and desired more information as to just what areas of the county are affected. The clerk was instructed to inquire details from the Valuation Department. Poundkeeper. Mr F. Thomas, Hamilton, tendered his resignation as poundkeeper . for the County, as he has sold his property to Mr F. Waters. Mr Fred Walters, Frankton Junction, applied for the position of poundkeeper.—Appointed. The secretary, Whatawhata Farmers' Union, drew attention to the nuisance and damage caused by stray stock on the roads in Whatawhata district. The ranger has not visited the district for some time. Resignation. Cr A. H. Crawford has tendered his resignation as one of the representatives of the Newcastle riding. In intimating this fact in writing to the Council yesterday, Cr Crawford stated that he had enjoyed his term of office and regretted that the circumstances were such that he would not continue in office. Harbour Board Representation. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that the Council's suggestion for an alteration of the law in connection with the grouping of boroughs and counties in ocmbined harbour districts had been referred to the Marine Department to deal with.—Received. A Missintr Toucher. The Audit Office requested payment to the public account of £2, representing audit fee charged against the Newcastle Road Board for the year ended March 31, 1920. The clerk reported that the amount was paid into the public account at the Bank of N.Z. at Te Awamutu on July 3, and the bank receipt posted to the Audit Office.— Approved. j 3liscellaneons. j Mr A. J. Newton, Frankton, complained of the disgraceful state of Higgins' road and Myrtle Street, and the bad state of the drain, as the water there is stagnant. Mr W. J. Hodgson, Hairini, renewed a request for attention to be given to Tong's road.—Left to riding member. Mrs M. A. Forkert. Te Awamutu, asked that attention he given to the road going past her farm at Mangapiko Referred to Cr Alexander. Cr Storey asked that some improvement be effected at Cooper's road, Hairini, as it was in a bad state. He realised that it could not be metalled at present, but he would like it formed, with provision for access from the main ro ad. —Agreed to, the matter being left in the hands of the engineer. The clerk and engineer were deputed to take the necessary steps for the creation of a special rating area in the Rotokauri district for a roading im- , provement loan. The area includes portion of the Newcastle and Hamilton ridings. It was decided to apply for permission to raise the 10 per cent additional on the £2OOO Puahue loan, the machinery loan and the Newcastle metalling loan. It was anticipated that the money can be obtained at 51 per cent through the Public Trust Office. The engineer was authorised to get county riding maps prepared on an enlarged scale, at an approximate cost of £lO per riding.
