TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL HEFTING SUMMARY OF BUSINESS. The fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamntu Borough Council was held last night. Tlie Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) presided, and there were also present Crs G. Spinley, C. G. Downes, C. Bygrave, J. W. McCarroll, P. W. Peate. W. J, North. J. C. Montefiore, B. McGechie, and Messrs H. E. Toogood (consulting engineer), J. Archer (foreman). E. F. Scott (supervisor), C. Bridge (drainage overseer), and D. Bockett (clerk),, Works Committee. The Works Committee by report recommended the Council to attend to storm water drainage in Goodfellow Street. The purchase of a little grader had been authorised, the old grader to be repaired. Other matters attended to concerned cartage contracts, culverting. property subdivision and road repairs.—The report was adopted. Toini Ball and Mousing. The Town Hall and Library Comr inittee reported having appointed Cr Peate its chairman. It recommended the Council to pay the account for £O4 5s for painting the hall, and also other small accounts connected with hall maintenance. The Committee recommended that in future all work exceeding £2O in value be tendered for. The Committee w?" taking steps to provide tables for Ho upper room and -other equipment. The Town Clerk had been thanked for having a;-ted as caretaker of the hall so capably. Cr Downes asked what the committee had done beyond hall matters. He referred, particularly to the utilisation of the housing loan. The Mayor renlied that it now only remained for a schedule of repayments to he adopted. Inquiries in I this connection were now being made and the scheme would he launched in i the near future. The superintendent of the State Ad- i van or s Department forwarded the | preliminary documents in conned ion j with the raising of an additional j £500'.) Instalment on account of the sewerage loan. It was advised that the Advances Board had approved the application for this instalment. The cleric to attend. Water .Unins. A quotation from a Wellington firm was received for the supply of steel four inch pipes at 29 1-Scl per foot delivered at Te Awamntu. Shipment at this price could be effected during ’July, the offer being only for early acceptance—Referred to the Works Committee. Street .Name Plates. An offer to supply enamelled street name plates was received from an Australian firm. The Mayor recalled past enquiries in - his respect. The letter was worth recording for future reference. Cr McGechie: Just now we want the streets more than the name plates. A Temporary Drain. D. M. Christian asked for permist sion to lift a drain laid by him some years ago in Market Street pending the drainage scheme. The existence of this drain came as news to the Council, but the Town Clerk said the drain had been put in by arrangement with a former Council. Cr McCarroll asked if earth would be tl) own on to the metal when digging the trench to get at the pipes. If so this was not the time to do anything of this sort. There was enough mud this season without making more. Permission was granted subiect to the street formation not being damaged in any way. the earth being reinstated to the level of the road. Fire Brigade Matters. The Volunteer Fire Brigade reported a call to a fire at. Di Bradley’s residence on the 21st inst., and to Mr G. W. Taylor's residence on the 23rd. At both fires no serious damage was done, the former being confined to the stove itself, and the latter to the chimney. The claim for firemen’s time in each instances amounted to 21s. —The claims were approved, the owners concerned having to pay the Council the amounts involved. Cr McCarroll reported that the fire bell in College Street had been repaired and is now in perfect order;, Library Buildings. Mr H. G. Foster wrote terminating the tenancy of premises in the old k library building. He offered to retain one room if suitable to the Council, and stated, if the rental is reduced, that he would find an added facility for reletting the balance. Referred to the Library Committee for action. Rates Levied. In accordance with notice of motion given at last meeting the Mayor moved a resolution, as already notified in these columns, levying the rates for the current year. The total rate under all headings, ordinary and special, is 2!d in the £. urged the Council to seriously consider giving the clerk some assistance. The proposal was referred to the Finance Committee, a Councillor recalling a regulation that personal canvassing debarred any applicant. Cr Montefiore considered the proposal should he deferred until the loan is carried for further streets work. There would then be considerably added work. The Mayor said the Finance Committee would merely consider the position and report to the Council later on. General. Cr Spinley asked for an indication of the amounts expended on street, works to date in this financial year. This would enable the Works Committee to see how far the allocation had gone. Cr Spinley enquired whether any Councillor had given consent to anybody to deposit spoil earth in Walton Street. This had made the street impassable. Cr Montefiore referred to a dangerous drain in this locality, and the storm water is also allowed to flow across (he street.—-It was decided that necessary work he done. Cr North enquired whether the Finance Committee had done anything further regarding the registration of dogs.—lt was explained that the registration month is December and there are difficulties in dealing with it now. The Committee was considering the law on the subject and would report.
