WAIKATO MARKET REPORT.

A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW.

The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company reports .under date of 14th August as follows: The advance in ,beef prices has resulted in much better yardings, but vaiues have been well sustained. Ox beef is selling at from 21s to 25s per 100 lbs, according to .quality; cow ibeef •from ISs to 20s. Mutton is subject to slight fluctuations, although well-fatted lines always' meet with ready sale. The store cattle market has advanced and again steadied. Grown :steers are, however, in good demand, iYounger steers are also steady, 'but 'not plentiful. Heifers, on the other 'hand, have suffered a sharp decline, though in the depressed state of the '".springer" market this is scarcely •to be wondered at. Faricy has turned largely to Holstein heifers, tor which >there is an unsatisfied demand. There is- a steady demand for all •classes of store sheep, hoggets especially being in strong favour. . i The dairy cattle market generally is over-stocked, and exceedingly de- ' 'pressed. Good dattie at profit still idraw fair competition, but the average •dairy ,beast is little .sought after. It seems strange that in the farmers' organisations, where much activity has lately been displayed, no effort is made to more than remotely suggest protection of the average dairyman from ;the result of bis own tolly and bad judgment. To thoss who watch the •dairy sales through the spring season •it is amazing to note with what e'ase •a cull cow is passed from one herd to •another, a guarantee of soundness .being a sufficient testimonial to effect •the transfer. An animal that is unfit j for one dairy should be unfit for any. 'but this fact seems unlikely to be realised for some time to come. • The p'ig market in all branches is improving steadily, short supplies only •being obtainable. There is a good demand for draught •horses of all classes, but backs are not ■much sought after. We .quote: Prime heaw bullocks £8 5s to £lO, medium £7 to £B. light £6 to ,£G 15s. .heavy cows £5 to .£7 IDs,'medium .£4 to £4 15s, forward £2 5s to £3, 4-year steers 33 15s to .£4 12s 6d. 3-year steers £2 15s to £'3 10s, 21-year Shorthorn heifers (r.w.b.) £7 to ~£S 10s. 2-year Jersey £lO to £l4, 2-year Shorthorn £5 to £6 10s, store cows £1 5s to £2. ,best 18-month steers
