SYDNEY'S WINE BARS.

CURSES OF CITY LIFE

'SYDNEY, August, 2

The New South Wales section of the Women's Prohibition Council has jusit published an interesting -report of its investigations into Sydney's wine bars.

The report -states : For the last two months investigation of the crying evil of drunkenness 1 among women has been the subject of inquiry by this committee, and the result is almost too sad for publication. Thirtyone bars have been visited, always by two members), to ensure accuracy, and in them 245 girls and women have been counted, all drinking, many intoxicated. Some had children in their arms. There are now in the metropolitan area 112 wine bars, miany of them disguised as fruit shops, into which the eye of the passer-toy cannot penetrate. There are also 601 pulblic houses, and it 'is a noticeable fact that women now enter the bars of the ordinary hotel much more readily than they did ai one time. A well-known inspector, interviewed on the subject, said :

" Drinking among women of all classes 'is now very general and rapidly increasing. Any effort that can be made to lessen it should be made for it is one of the > curses of our city life." These figures have been submitted to the Minister of Health. •
